Stand-Ups and LIVE shots

A compilation of demonstrative stand-ups and LIVE shots from the month of September 2012.

Backpack Journalism: Bananas Bike

A man who rides his bike to and from work more than 20 miles a day is getting attention from drivers. This story was shot using the GoPro and XDCam. I used NATS and creative shots to tell the story and interview the man.

Backpack Journalism: Street Beats

Shot, written and edited by Lauren Squires. Features a group of Omaha teachers who won a contest that features them in an Omaha commercial. But watch closely...because this story has more too it than the commercial.

General Reporting

I had a little fun with this story. After visiting this rescue and seeing just how many birds this woman can fit in her home, I realized it was a great opportunity to tell her story creatively and show just how bad she needs more space.

Backpack Journalism: Mountain Bike Trail

I shot, wrote and edited this story using Sony XDCam and two GoPro's.  It was fun to shoot and even more fun to put together.  You can find out more about THOR, "Trails Have Our Respect" by visiting www.trailsdeserveourrespect.org.

Drowning Follow-up

This is a sad story that I had to tell, only after the mother and homeless shelter called and asked to talk to me exclusively.  It was a humbling and an honor to tell this story.  The mother's faith was inspiring.

Breaking News

This video shows a story from start to finish.  We responded to a radio call about a shooting at the Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE.  We were the first crew on the scene and the first crew LIVE from the scene at 4:00 pm.  Then we continued with updates at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00.

Investigation: Life On The Streets I

This story was put together for May 2012 Sweeps. I hit the streets and talked with a teen who was recently homeless. She shows me around and takes me to a place where many of her peers spent the night.

Investigation: Life On The Streets II

This is Part II of my series on homeless teens.  We talked with a former homless teen about the struggles faced on the streets, particularly sex trafficking and drugs.  Her story is powerful for people living in the Omaha community who might not realize there is a problem.

Creative Stand-Up: Teen Driving Study

This story aired in May 2012 and was the result of a national AAA study on teen driving.  Watching this story you'll notice several different techniques were used to tell it.  Natural sound, GoPro video, creative stand up and unique editing.  It's a different take on a pretty typical story.

Investigation: Responding To Danger

A sweeps piece put together after a following the Omaha Fire Department and Engine 1 around for an afternoon and evening shift. This story focuses on the dangers of responding to shootings and assaults.

Backpack Journalism: Concussion Awareness Act

A look into the life of an athletic trainer during state wrestling meet. How a new law will change how they do their job and how athletes and coaches approach the mat.

Investigation: Cardiology Clinic Sexual Assaults

After a month of investigating I was the first to break this story about a string of sexual assaults at a cardiology clinic. I found the intial police reports and contacted the victims. Over the course of a month and a lot of phone calls to various organizations and leaders, a man was arrested two days after this story aired. His bond was set for $1 million.

A Different Take On A Standard Story

I traveled back in time for this story about a cold winter night. With such a range in temperatures in January 2012, I got creative and thought ahead.

Storytelling: The Perfect Game

_ 1.25.12 - Shot and edited myself. The story of a 13-year-old in Fremont, Nebraska who bowled a perfect game. He is the 3rd on his JV team to do so.

Quick Turn: Christmas Homecoming

12.22.12 - This story was shot in College Springs, Iowa (2 hours outside of Omaha.  The surprise happened

In-Depth Storytelling: Shoplifting

This is a story that aired in November 2011 as a part of our sweeps covereage.  I talked with two women about an unlikely addiction: shoplifting.  It's been diagnosed as an actualy clinical problem.  Their story is interesting and shows a side of shoplifting that many of us don't think about.

Enterprise Story: Surprise Homecoming

8.26.11 - This is a story I literally stumbled upon while I was shooting highlights of the Bellevue East verse Bellevue West football game.  I arrived at half time, with the intention to shoot a few highlights of the 3rd quarter and head back to the station. Instead I shot this story, got some highlights and went back to the station.  I arrived back about 9:30 and edited this package in 30 minutes.  A fast turn but certainly worth the effort given the value of the moment.
